Science Series 11: Dr. Vandana Miller / Plasma Biology & Medicine / Plasma as Wound & Cancer Treatment
Dr. Vandana Miller, MD is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Institute for Molecular Medicine & Infectious Disease at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the USA and a member of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
In 2019 she was an invited visiting scholar at INP Greifswald, Germany and at the University of Bari, Italy. As a physician-scientist, she now leads the interdisciplinary Laboratory of Translational Plasma Research. Her research focuses on applications of plasma, the fourth state of matter, for cancer treatment, wound healing, skin diseases, and viral diseases.
She is recognized for introducing a major shift in philosophy in plasma medicine – as a method to stimulate immune responses for treatment of diseases. She has participated in several clinical studies in Germany and USA. In recognition of her contributions to the Plasma Medicine community, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.
She is the current President of the International Society of Plasma Medicine and the Chair of the International Workshop on Plasmas for Cancer Treatment. She serves on the International Scientific Advisory board for many international research programs. and editorial boards of several international journals and as an ad hoc reviewer for others.
Her research is funded by National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, United States Department of Agriculture, The Kerith Foundation, and many private companies including Campbell Soup. She has mentored numerous PhD, Masters and bachelor’s students in their research projects and careers in The US and in the EU.
In this emerging field of plasma medicine, she has published over 55 papers and 4 book chapters. She has presented over a 110 conference papers and more than 40 invited talks.
