Dr Karen Barrett is an assistant professor at UCSF (University of California, San Francisco) with a joint appointment at the Institute for Health and Aging at the School of Nursing and department of Otolaryngology at the School of Medicine. She is also a classically trained pianist, a faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.


Her research focuses on the neuroscience of creativity, complex sound perception of cochlear implant users, and the impact of music on the aging brain. Dr Barrett is also researching neural plasticity and musical training, improvisational music and creativity, and exploring the biological basis of musical performance.
